Even the guru gets caught sometime! That's right.  I did not practice what I preach about the importance of regular exercise and consistency with a self care regimen. As Team member Jen Kenneally, MT recently shared in "Listening to Your Body with Jen Kenneally," "when we listen to our bodies when they whisper to us and practice good self-care, our bodies won’t need to shout at us and shut down."

I'd been doing a lot of driving and the car is one of the worst places for our bodies. I was going through the normal grind of my life and I heard the whispers from my knee. I had this internal dialogue of I know I should get in that work out and get a massage ... oh that's okay I'll do it later...

The whisper of the pain in my knee turned into a shout!

I started a regimen of Advil, self-massage, alternating hot and cold therapy, warm moist heat and began low weight high repetition exercises. I got back on the massage table! Often tight muscles are the culprit for an injury. We often run to brace the joint when we are injured but it is important to get to a doctor if the pain doesn't improve after 2 weeks with a continued program of self-care. If the injury is joint related then in all likelihood a brace would be recommended but if it is in the musculature then a brace is not going to help and can lead to more injury.

After an injury happens, physical therapy can be a good complement to massage therapy. Physical therapy, however, does not address the compensatory patterns that contributed to the injury. Regular massage therapy helps to keep the body loose and in balance and minimizes the risk of injury.

We are only human wonderfully imperfect beings. Injuries are going to happen and yes even the guru gets caught. By keeping yourself in the best possible shape, if an injury does happen, it will improve the outcome with rehab.

Of course, we all know that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! So why not begin today ...
